Frequently asked questions

Understand privacy, free allowances, export formats, collection archiving, installation and local backups.

What is WeChat to Markdown?

A Chrome and Edge extension maintained by Wangshan, available at wx2md.com. It focuses on reading, saving and exporting WeChat Official Account articles, and also supports ordinary article pages you choose to save.

Are my articles uploaded?

Parsing, conversion and packaging run locally. Article bodies, URLs and titles are not sent to the operator. Image downloads contact their original hosts; licensing and update checks may contact the operator. Optional product analytics are off by default. Read the privacy policy.

Which export formats are supported?

Markdown, HTML, PNG share images and PDF through browser printing. Optional image ZIP archives contain files for offline reading; PDF layout and output are handled by the browser print dialog.

Can I export to Word?

Direct Word (.docx) export is not available. Supported export types are Markdown, HTML, a PNG share card and PDF via the browser print dialog. Markdown and HTML files can be further edited with your local tools.

Can I keep using the free plan?

Yes. It currently includes 10 single-article exports per month shared across Markdown, HTML, PNG and image ZIP exports. Failed or cancelled exports do not count; PDF printing currently does not count. See current limits and entitlements.

How do I use Obsidian, SiYuan or Typora?

Export Markdown, then move it into an Obsidian vault, import it into SiYuan or open it in Typora or VS Code. Unzip image archives first and keep the relative folder structure. Advanced integrations belong to the full version. See the Obsidian guide.

Can I archive a full collection?

Yes, but open a public collection page first (URL contains /mp/appmsgalbum) and use the on-page Collection Archive button. A single article page can only save that one article. The full version supports complete, incremental, split and resumable archiving. The free collection trial is separate from the monthly single-article allowance: one successful export of up to 5 articles. See the collection download guide.

Only content actually provided to the browser can be exported. The extension cannot read your purchase status in WeChat. If an article in a paid collection only provides a public preview, only that preview is exported. Even if you have purchased access in WeChat, the extension cannot unlock the paid full text. An extension license unlocks tool features, not access to paid WeChat content.

Can I export videos embedded in WeChat articles?

Yes. When exporting a single article as Markdown or HTML, enable the video download option to save public videos available from the page in the ZIP archive's videos/ folder. Markdown retains video links, while HTML retains video players. Restricted videos or videos without an available download URL retain a link to the original article; not every video can be downloaded. PNG and PDF exports do not include video files, and collection batch exports do not currently download videos.

Can it bypass paywalls or access restrictions?

No. Only process content you have the right to access and use. It does not bypass login, paywalls or platform restrictions or grant third-party content rights. Local saving does not grant republication or commercial-use rights. Read the terms.

Why can’t AI assistants read WeChat article links?

WeChat articles are protected by access controls and anti-scraping measures, so most AI assistants cannot reliably fetch the full text. WeChat to Markdown converts the article locally in your browser while you are viewing it normally — save it as Markdown first, then organize the file into your knowledge base or use it yourself. The tool does not bypass access controls; using exported content for AI training or datasets beyond personal organization requires the rights holder’s permission. Read the terms.

Does it support ordinary web pages?

Yes. The Chrome and Edge store versions support article-style blogs, news and tutorials. Open an article you have permission to save, click the extension and choose the current-page tool; export or add it to the local library after successful extraction. Web and WeChat single-article exports share the free allowance. Complex apps, unusual layouts or dynamic content may not be extracted fully; access controls are not bypassed. This capability is not included in the Community MVP.

How does Community source differ from the store version?

Community v0.3.0 open-sources only the core MVP: single WeChat article Markdown exports, optional image ZIPs and quick saving. It does not include ordinary web-page extraction, the local article library or collection archiving, and is not the store free plan. The store product is versioned independently and combines free and paid Pro features in one extension. Official installation is available through the Chrome Web Store and Microsoft Edge Add-ons with the same entitlement rules; their published versions may temporarily differ during store review. Use the official download page.

Where do I install it? Do I need an account?

Choose the Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons on the download page. Basic use requires no account. Follow the first-save guide; paid licensing details are on the pricing page.

Which browsers are supported?

Chrome and Edge are officially supported through the Chrome Web Store and Microsoft Edge Add-ons, respectively. See the official installation options. Other browser engines are not individually adapted; results depend on the actual page.

Will the local library last forever?

It has no automatic expiry, but it is not a permanent backup. Uninstalling, clearing browser data, switching browsers or browser profiles can cause data loss. Export or back up regularly.

What if images are missing or export fails?

Check that the original article and images load normally, then retry. Failed image downloads retain their original URLs and are reported; those images may still need a network connection. Visit support for troubleshooting.
